"I
enjoy talking with adults and children about the writing process.
I have worked with elementary students since 1994, helping them understand
all the different elements of writing. Recently, a second-grader
told me I was scaring her because I showed her class my most recent novel
in manuscript form -- all 300-plus pages of it. She also didn't like
hearing about how much revising goes into writing a book. I explained
how revising makes a book better, and that when she was older she would
want to read longer books (she looked doubtful, but went along with it),
which means writers have to write more. She thought about this, then
she said she still wants to be a writer.
"I
also work with teenagers and adults, and I love meeting all the closet
writers out there who haven't dared to submit their work yet. It
gives me a chance to say, "Go for it! If I can do it, you can!"
"I
am currently booking school visits for 2004/2005, as well as writing workshops.
